Place Value

Place value tells the worth of each digit based on its position. In fifth grade, this supports whole numbers and decimals together.

Concept

Every place is 10 times the place to its right.

Whole number side: - ones, tens, hundreds, thousands...

Decimal side: - tenths, hundredths, thousandths...

Examples: - In 43,216, the 4 means 40,000. - In 7.428, the 4 means 0.4 and the 2 means 0.02.

Key relation: 1 tenth = 10 hundredths 1 hundredth = 10 thousandths
