Divide Unit Fractions by Whole Numbers

What happens when you divide a fraction into equal parts? You get smaller pieces! Dividing 1/2 by 3 means splitting a half into 3 equal parts. Let's visualize this concept!

Concept

Dividing a unit fraction by a whole number creates smaller pieces!

🎯 What is a Unit Fraction? A unit fraction has 1 in the numerator: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, etc.

📊 The Concept: When you divide a fraction, you're splitting it into smaller equal parts!

Example: 1/2 ÷ 3

Think: "Divide 1/2 into 3 equal parts"

Visual: [▮▮▮▮▮▮] ← This is 1 whole, divided into halves [▮▮▮|▮▮▮] ← This is 1/2

Now split that 1/2 into 3 pieces: [▮|▮|▮] ← Each piece is much smaller!

The whole is now divided into 6 equal pieces. Each new piece is 1/6!

So: 1/2 ÷ 3 = 1/6

💡 The Pattern: When dividing a unit fraction by a whole number, multiply the denominator by that whole number!

1/2 ÷ 3 = 1/(2×3) = 1/6 1/3 ÷ 4 = 1/(3×4) = 1/12 1/4 ÷ 5 = 1/(4×5) = 1/20

🌟 Why This Works: Think of 1/4 ÷ 2: • You have 1/4 of something • You split it into 2 equal parts • Each part is half of 1/4 • Half of 1/4 is 1/8 • 1/4 ÷ 2 = 1/8 ✓

Using Area Models:

1/3 ÷ 4: Draw a rectangle divided into thirds: [▯|▯|▯]

Shade 1/3: [▮|▯|▯]

Now divide that shaded part into 4 pieces: The whole rectangle now has 12 equal pieces! Each of the 4 pieces is 1/12.

Answer: 1/3 ÷ 4 = 1/12

🎨 Connection to Multiplication: Dividing by a whole number is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal!

1/2 ÷ 3 = 1/2 × 1/3 = 1/6 ✓

Real-World Interpretation: "I have 1/2 of a pizza. I need to share it equally among 3 people. How much does each person get?"

1/2 ÷ 3 = 1/6 of the whole pizza per person

📏 The Rule (Simplified): To divide a unit fraction by a whole number: Keep the 1 on top, multiply the bottom by the whole number

1/a ÷ b = 1/(a × b)

📊 Word Problems: 11. You have 1/2 of a candy bar. You split it equally between 4 friends. What fraction of the whole candy bar does each friend get?

12. A ribbon is 1/3 of a yard long. You cut it into 6 equal pieces. How long is each piece (as a fraction of a yard)?

13. Sarah has 1/4 of a pizza. She divides it equally onto 3 plates. What fraction of the whole pizza is on each plate?

🏆 Apply Understanding: 14. 1/8 ÷ 3 = ?
