Skip-Count by Fives

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Skip-counting by 5s is super fun! Instead of counting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... you jump by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20! It's faster and it helps you with money, time, and multiplication later!

Do this: Read the concept below, then try the quiz or activity.

Lesson 111 of 180

Concept

Skip-counting by 5s is one of the most useful counting patterns!

๐ŸŽฏ The Pattern: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60...

Each number is 5 MORE than the one before it!

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Use Your Hands: Each hand has 5 fingers! โ€ข 1 hand = 5 โ€ข 2 hands = 10 โ€ข 3 hands = 15 โ€ข 4 hands = 20 โ€ข 5 hands = 25

Keep counting hands! ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ’ก Notice the Pattern in the Ones Place: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40... The ones place goes: 5, 0, 5, 0, 5, 0, 5, 0... It alternates between 5 and 0!

๐ŸŽต Make it a Song: "5, 10, 15, 20 โ€” counting by fives is fun, you know! 25, 30, 35, 40 โ€” keep on going, don't be slow!"

๐ŸŒŸ Why Skip-Count by 5s? โ€ข Counting nickels (each nickel = 5ยข) โ€ข Reading clocks (each number = 5 minutes) โ€ข Counting by groups of 5 (like hands!) โ€ข Preparing for multiplication (5 ร— 3 = skip count by 5s three times)

Try it

Let's practice skip-counting by 5s!

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Fill in the Missing Numbers: 1. 5, 10, 15, ___, 25, ___ 2. 30, 35, ___, 45, ___, 55 3. 5, ___, 15, ___, 25

๐Ÿ“ Count by 5s: 4. Start at 0 and count by 5s up to 50. Write all the numbers.

5. Start at 5 and count by 5s up to 40.

๐ŸŽจ Hand Counting:
6. If you have 6 hands worth of fingers, how many fingers is that?
   (Count: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, ___)

7. Count by 5s to find how many: ๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐Ÿ–๏ธ (4 hands)

๐Ÿ’ฐ Money Problem:
8. Each nickel is worth 5 cents. If you have 5 nickels, how much money do you have?
   (Skip-count: 5ยข, 10ยข, 15ยข, 20ยข, ___)

๐Ÿ† Challenge: 9. Can you count by 5s all the way to 100? Try it!

10. Count backward by 5s from 50 to 0!
    (50, 45, 40...)

๐Ÿ’ช Real Practice: 11. Look at a clock. Point to each number and skip-count by 5s around the clock: 5, 10, 15... all the way to 60!
