Comparing: How Many Fewer?

๐Ÿค” "How many fewer?" is just the other side of the same coin as "how many more?". If you have more, the other person has fewer! The difference is the same.

Do this: Read the concept below, then try the quiz or activity.

Lesson 27 of 180

Concept

"How many fewer?" and "How many more?" are two ways of asking for the exact same number: the difference!

๐ŸŽฏ The Flip-Side Rule: Let's compare a group of 8 and a group of 5. * Question 1: How many more is 8 than 5? * You subtract: 8 - 5 = 3. * Answer: 8 is 3 more than 5. * Question 2: How many fewer is 5 than 8? * You still subtract: 8 - 5 = 3. * Answer: 5 is 3 fewer than 8.

The number for the difference (3) is the same! The only thing that changes is the word you use ("more" or "fewer").

Visual: TOWER 1: ๐ŸŸฅ๐ŸŸฅ๐ŸŸฅ๐ŸŸฅ๐ŸŸฅ๐ŸŸฅ๐ŸŸฅ๐ŸŸฅ (8 blocks) TOWER 2: ๐ŸŸจ๐ŸŸจ๐ŸŸจ๐ŸŸจ๐ŸŸจ (5 blocks) The difference in height is 3 blocks. The red tower has 3 more. The yellow tower has 3 fewer.

Try it

Let's practice seeing both sides of the comparison!
