Super Doubles: Models and Facts

๐ŸŽฒ Doubles are your secret weapon in math! When you add a number to itself (3+3), you unlock the power of doubles. Let's explore them with models and master the facts!

Do this: Read the concept below, then try the quiz or activity.

Lesson 36 of 180

Concept

Doubles are when you add the exact same number twice. Knowing them by heart makes solving other, harder addition problems a piece of cake!

๐ŸŽฏ Key Doubles to Master:
*   1 + 1 = 2 (๐Ÿ‘€ two eyes)
*   2 + 2 = 4 (๐Ÿš— car wheels)
*   3 + 3 = 6 (๐Ÿฅš half-dozen eggs)
*   4 + 4 = 8 (๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ spider legs)
*   5 + 5 = 10 (โœ‹๐Ÿคš two hands)
*   6 + 6 = 12 (๐Ÿฉ a dozen donuts)
*   7 + 7 = 14 (๐Ÿ—“๏ธ two weeks)
*   8 + 8 = 16 ( Crayola crayons)
*   9 + 9 = 18
*   10 + 10 = 20 (๐Ÿ™Œ all your fingers and toes!)
Visualizing with Models:
You can "see" doubles everywhere!
* With Cubes: Build two towers of the same height. Snap them together! A tower of 4 and another tower of 4 make a big tower of 8.
* With Drawings: Draw two identical groups of objects side-by-side.
    *   ๐Ÿ”ต๐Ÿ”ต๐Ÿ”ต๐Ÿ”ต
    *   ๐Ÿ”ต๐Ÿ”ต๐Ÿ”ต๐Ÿ”ต
    *   This shows 4 + 4 = 8.
* With Ten Frames: A double 5+5 perfectly fills one ten frame!
๐Ÿš€ Why Doubles are a Superpower (Near Doubles):
Once you know 6 + 6 = 12, you can instantly solve:
* 6 + 7: This is just one more than 6+6, so the answer is 13!
* 6 + 5: This is just one less than 6+6, so the answer is 11!

Try it

Let's train our doubles superpower!

Part 1: The Models 1. Draw a picture to show the double fact 3 + 3 = 6. 2. Draw a model for 5 + 5 = 10. (Hint: A ten frame is perfect for this!) 3. If you have two towers of cubes, each 7 blocks tall, how many blocks do you have in all? ___

Part 2: Complete the Sentence Fill in the missing number to complete the double. 4. 4 + ___ = 8 5. ___ + 6 = 12 6. 9 + 9 = ___

Part 3: Fact Practice 7. 7 + 7 = ___ 8. 2 + 2 = ___ 9. 8 + 8 = ___

Part 4: Near Doubles Challenge! Use your doubles knowledge to solve these. 10. If you know 5+5=10, what is 5 + 6? ___ 11. If you know 7+7=14, what is 7 + 8? ___ 12. If you know 8+8=16, what is 8 + 7? ___
