Addition Sentences: Which is True?

⚖️ Be the judge of the math court! Not every math sentence is telling the truth. You must use the equals sign to smoke out the imposters.

Do this: Read the concept below, then try the quiz or activity.

Lesson 75 of 180

Concept

An equation is only true if both sides of the equals sign (=) have exactly the same value! It's like a balanced seesaw.

🎯 Spotting the Fakes: Look at this sentence: 7 + 4 = 10 1. Solve the left side: 7 + 4 = 11. 2. Look at the right side: It says 10. 3. Does 11 = 10? No! The seesaw is broken! This sentence is FALSE.

Look at this sentence: 8 + 5 = 13 1. Solve the left side: 8 + 5 = 13. 2. Look at the right side: It says 13. 3. Does 13 = 13? Yes! The seesaw is perfectly balanced! This sentence is TRUE.

Try it

You be the judge!

Instructions: Solve the addition part. Does it match the answer? Circle True or False.

1. 9 + 3 = 12
   * True / False
2. 6 + 7 = 14
   * True / False (Hint: Evaluate 6+7 first!)
3. 15 + 4 = 19
   * True / False
4. 8 + 8 = 15
   * True / False
5. 0 + 17 = 17
   * True / False

Challenge! Can you find the completely true sentence? A) 5 + 9 = 13 B) 10 + 6 = 16 C) 7 + 8 = 14
