Measure Using an Inch Ruler
๐ Meet the Ruler! It's time to graduate from paper clips and cubes to the real tool adults use to measure length in inches.
Do this: Read the concept below, then try the quiz or activity.
Concept
A ruler is a measuring stick with numbers and lines printed on it. Most rulers in the United States measure in inches.
๐ฏ How to Use an Inch Ruler: 1. Find the Zero: This is the most important step! Find the "0" line. (Be careful: sometimes the 0 line is right at the edge of the wood, and sometimes it's printed a tiny bit inside the plastic!) 2. Line it up: Place the 0 line exactly at the edge of the object you want to measure. 3. Read the number: Look at where the other end of the object stops. Look straight down at the number on the ruler. 4. Say your unit: Don't just say "It is 5!" Say "It is 5 inches."
Example: A carrot starts at the 0 line. The pointy end of the carrot stops exactly at the line that says 6. The carrot is 6 inches long!

Problem 2: You measure a hot dog. It starts at the 0 mark and ends perfectly at the 5 mark. How long is the hot dog? * Answer: ___ inches.
Problem 3: What happens if you accidentally use the wrong side of the ruler (the side with the tiny, tiny centimeter lines) by mistake when the teacher asks for inches? A) It's fine, measurements are all the same! B) Your number will be totally wrong!
