Make a Number Using Addition - Sums up to 10

šŸ”Ø A number can be built in many different ways! Just like you can build a house with different blocks, you can "make" a number like 7 using different pairs of smaller numbers. Let's be number builders!

Lesson 5

Concept

This is all about seeing the "parts" inside of a "whole" number. The number 5 is the whole. It can be made of parts like 1 and 4, or 2 and 3. šŸŽÆ **How to Break Apart a Number:** Let's find all the ways to make the number **6**. 1. **Start with 1:** If one part is 1, what's the other part? * 1 + 5 = 6 2. **Try 2:** If one part is 2, what's the other part? * 2 + 4 = 6 3. **Try 3:** * 3 + 3 = 6 4. **Keep going!** What about 4? * 4 + 2 = 6 (Hey, that's a turnaround fact of 2+4!) 5. **And 5?** * 5 + 1 = 6 (A turnaround of 1+5!) **The number pairs that make 6 are:** * 1 and 5 * 2 and 4 * 3 and 3 This is also called "decomposing" a number. It's a very important skill for addition and subtraction!

Try it

Let's be number builders and find all the ways to make these numbers! **Instructions:** Write all the addition sentences you can think of that make the target number. **1. Make the number 5:** * 0 + 5 = 5 * 1 + ___ = 5 * 2 + ___ = 5 * (Can you find the rest?) **2. Make the number 7:** * ___ + ___ = 7 * ___ + ___ = 7 * ___ + ___ = 7 * ___ + ___ = 7 **3. Make the number 8:** * Find at least 4 ways to make 8! šŸ† **Pattern Challenge:** Look at the ways to make the number 9: 0+9, 1+8, 2+7, 3+6, 4+5 What do you notice about the first number in each pair? What about the second number? **4. Circle all the pairs that make 10:** * 4 + 6 * 2 + 7 * 5 + 5 * 9 + 1 * 3 + 8
