Subtracting 6

🧱 6 is just 5 plus 1! If you know how to subtract 5, you already know how to subtract 6. Just take one more step.

Lesson 5

Concept

Subtracting 6 might seem tricky, but it's built out of numbers you already know. 6 is made of 5 + 1. šŸŽÆ **The "Five and One More" Strategy:** **Example: 9 - 6 = ?** Instead of counting back 6 times, break the 6 into a 5 and a 1. 1. **Subtract 5 first:** 9 - 5 = 4. (Easy!) 2. **Now subtract 1 more:** 4 - 1 = 3. So, **9 - 6 = 3**. šŸŽÆ **Teen Numbers:** For teen numbers, use the 10! **Example: 14 - 6 = ?** Use the "Step on 10" trick. Take away 4 to get to 10. Then take away 2 more. 10 - 2 = 8.

Try it

Let's practice the "Five and One More" trick! **Instructions:** Subtract 5, then subtract 1 more! **Problem 1: 8 - 6 = ?** * 8 - 5 = 3. * 3 - 1 = ___ * Answer: 8 - 6 = ___ **Problem 2: 10 - 6 = ?** * 10 - 5 = 5. * 5 - 1 = ___ * Answer: ___ **Problem 3: 7 - 6 = ?** * Answer: ___ **Problem 4: 15 - 6 = ?** * (Hint: Step on 10! 15 - 5 = 10, take one more...) * Answer: ___
