An elephant ate 12 MORE pieces of cheese than the mouse. How many pieces did the elephant eat?" * **Small Amount:** The mouse ate 5. * **The Difference:** The elephant ate 12 extra pieces. * **Large Amount:** ??? **Equation:** Since we want to find the gigantic amount the elephant ate, we need to ADD the small amount and the extra difference together! * 5 (mouse's cheese) + 12 (the extra cheese) = 17. * **Answer:** The elephant ate 17 pieces of cheese! When you want to find the larger amount, you **ADD** (+).
