Lesson 3

Concept

You know how to check addition, and you know how to check subtraction. Now they are completely mixed up! šŸŽÆ **The "Double Check" Rule:** 1. **Check the sign:** Is it a plus or a minus? 2. **Check the math:** Do the calculation. 3. **Check the balance:** Does it match the number on the other side of the equals sign? Sometimes, both sides of the equals sign will have math on them! **Example: 5 + 4 = 10 - 1** 1. Solve the left side: 5 + 4 = 9. 2. Solve the right side: 10 - 1 = 9. 3. Does 9 = 9? YES! This is a **TRUE** sentence!

Try it

Double check your math! **Instructions:** Check the sign (+ or -), solve the math, and decide if the seesaw is balanced. **1. 14 + 5 = 19** * True / False **2. 16 - 7 = 10** * True / False **3. 8 + 6 = 15** * True / False **4. 20 - 8 = 12** * True / False **Hardcore Challenge:** Balance both sides! **5. 6 + 6 = 15 - 3** * Left side: ___. Right side: ___. * True / False? **6. 10 + 2 = 20 - 7** * True / False?
