Concept
A subtraction word problem is a story where you start with an amount and then some of it is taken away. šÆ ** Your Detective Plan for Subtraction:** 1. ** Read the Story:** What's happening in the story? 2. ** Find the Starting Amount:** How many things are there at the beginning ? 3. ** Draw the Picture:** Draw all the objects from the start. 4. ** Cross Them Out:** Read how many were taken away, and cross that many objects out of your picture. 5. ** Count What's Left:** Count the objects that are NOT crossed out. That is your answer! ** Example Story:** "There were 8 cookies on a plate. Tom ate 3 of them. How many cookies are left?" * ** Starting Amount:** 8 cookies. * ** Draw:** Draw 8 cookies: šŖšŖšŖšŖšŖšŖšŖšŖ * ** Cross Out:** Tom ate 3, so cross 3 out: šŖšŖšŖšŖšŖ~~šŖ~~ ~~šŖ~~ ~~šŖ~~ * ** Count What's Left:** There are 5 cookies left that are not crossed out. * ** Answer:** 8 - 3 = 5.
