Interpret line plots with fractions: multi-step problems

Line plots show data quickly. Fraction line plots help you count, combine, and compare measurements.

Do this: Read the concept below, then try the quiz or activity.

Lesson 135 of 202

Concept

A line plot places X marks over values on a number line.

Example values (in inches): 1/4, 1/4, 1/2, 1/2, 1/2, 3/4

From this you can answer: - How many measurements are 1/2? → 3 - Total of all measurements? 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/2 + 1/2 + 1/2 + 3/4 = 2 3/4 - Difference between longest and shortest? 3/4 - 1/4 = 1/2

šŸ“ˆ Multi-step means you may: 1. Read frequencies 2. Add fractional amounts 3. Compare totals or differences

Try it

Use this data set (in cups): 1/4, 1/2, 1/2, 3/4, 3/4, 3/4, 1.

1. How many data points are there? 2. Which value appears most? 3. What is the total amount of all data points? 4. How much greater is the largest value than the smallest? 5. If one 1/2-cup value is removed, what is the new total?

Challenge: 6. Create your own 8-value fraction data set and write one question about it.
