Concept

Factors are building blocks of numbers!

šŸŽÆ What Are Factors? Factors of a number are all the whole numbers that divide into it evenly (with no remainder).

Example: Factors of 12 Which numbers divide evenly into 12? • 12 Ć· 1 = 12 āœ“ • 12 Ć· 2 = 6 āœ“ • 12 Ć· 3 = 4 āœ“ • 12 Ć· 4 = 3 āœ“ • 12 Ć· 5 = 2.4 āœ— (not a whole number) • 12 Ć· 6 = 2 āœ“ • 12 Ć· 12 = 1 āœ“

Factors of 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12

šŸ’” Factor Pairs: Factor pairs are two numbers that multiply to give you the original number.

Factor pairs of 12: • 1 Ɨ 12 = 12 • 2 Ɨ 6 = 12 • 3 Ɨ 4 = 12

Notice: Each factor appears in a pair!

šŸ” Finding Factor Pairs Systematically:

For 24: • Start with 1: 1 Ɨ 24 = 24 āœ“ • Try 2: 2 Ɨ 12 = 24 āœ“ • Try 3: 3 Ɨ 8 = 24 āœ“ • Try 4: 4 Ɨ 6 = 24 āœ“ • Try 5: Doesn't work evenly • Stop when numbers repeat!

Factor pairs of 24: (1,24), (2,12), (3,8), (4,6) All factors of 24: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24

🌟 Special Facts: • 1 is a factor of EVERY number • Every number is a factor of itself • Even numbers always have 2 as a factor • Numbers with an odd number of factors are perfect squares!

šŸŽØ Array Model: You can show factor pairs with arrays!

12 can be arranged as:
• 1 row of 12: ā—ā—ā—ā—ā—ā—ā—ā—ā—ā—ā—ā—
• 2 rows of 6: ā—ā—ā—ā—ā—ā—
              ā—ā—ā—ā—ā—ā—
• 3 rows of 4: ā—ā—ā—ā—
              ā—ā—ā—ā—
              ā—ā—ā—ā—
