Perimeter: word problems

Perimeter tells you how far it is around a shape. It is perfect for borders, fences, and tracks.

Do this: Read the concept below, then try the quiz or activity.

Lesson 93 of 202

Concept

Perimeter is the total length around the edges.

For rectangles: P = 2 Ɨ (length + width)

Example: A garden is 14 ft by 9 ft. P = 2 Ɨ (14 + 9) = 2 Ɨ 23 = 46 ft

šŸŸļø Think like a field designer: - Want to put rope around a court? Use perimeter. - Want to run one lap around a track? Use perimeter. - Want to frame a poster? Use perimeter.

Try it

Solve these perimeter stories.

1. A rectangular playground is 35 m long and 20 m wide. What is the perimeter? 2. A photo frame measures 12 in by 8 in. How much trim is needed? 3. A square garden has side length 15 ft. What is its perimeter? 4. A yard perimeter is 64 ft. If length is 20 ft, what is the width?

Challenge: 5. Draw two different rectangles with perimeter 30 cm.
