Value of a digit

A digit is like an actor: its value changes depending on the place it stands in. The same digit can mean 7, 70, 700, or 7,000!

Lesson 2

Concept

Think of place value like apartment floors in a tower. šŸ¢ **Digit Tower:** In the number **472,915**: - 4 lives in the hundred-thousands place → value is **400,000** - 7 lives in the ten-thousands place → value is **70,000** - 2 lives in the thousands place → value is **2,000** - 9 lives in the hundreds place → value is **900** - 1 lives in the tens place → value is **10** - 5 lives in the ones place → value is **5** šŸ” **Same digit, different value:** Compare these: - In 3,**6**4, the 6 = 60 - In **6**,304, the 6 = 6,000 - In 94,2**6**8, the 6 = 60 🌟 **Rule:** Value of a digit = digit Ɨ place value. If the place changes, the value changes!
