Compare fractions using benchmarks

Benchmarks like 0, 1/2, and 1 help you compare fractions quickly without always finding common denominators.

Lesson 2

Concept

Use three benchmark anchors: - **0** - **1/2** - **1** Example 1: Compare 3/8 and 5/8 Same denominator → compare numerators → 5/8 is greater. Example 2: Compare 3/7 and 1/2 Half of 7 is 3.5, so 3/7 is just below 1/2. Therefore 3/7 < 1/2. Example 3: Compare 9/10 and 7/8 Both are close to 1, but 9/10 is 0.9 and 7/8 is 0.875, so 9/10 is greater. 🌟 Fast thinking: - Small numerator compared to denominator → near 0 - Numerator close to denominator → near 1

Try it

Compare using >, <, or =. 1. 2/5 ___ 1/2 2. 6/8 ___ 1/2 3. 7/9 ___ 1 4. 3/10 ___ 1/2 5. 5/6 ___ 4/5 Explain: 6. Why is 4/9 less than 1/2? 7. Which is closer to 1: 11/12 or 7/8?
