Identify a Half, a Third, and a Fourth

🏁 The Final Exam! Can you identify the fraction just by looking at the colored piece of the puzzle?

Do this: Read the concept below, then try the quiz or activity.

Lesson 186 of 186

Concept

Everything comes together. Equal pieces. Math words. Colored blocks.

🎯 The Colored Fraction Formula: 1. Count the TOTAL pieces. (This is the denominator/bottom word). Let's say there are 4 pieces total. So it's "Fourths". 2. Count the COLORED pieces. (This is the numerator/top number). Let's say exactly 1 piece is shaded red. 3. The Answer: The red part is 1/4 (One-Fourth) of the total shape!

If 3 parts were colored red? It would be 3/4 (Three-Fourths!).

Try it

Read the shaded fraction!

Instructions: Count the TOTAL pieces first to find the fraction name! Then look at the colored part.

Problem 1: A circle has 3 slices. Exactly 1 slice is colored blue. * Fraction name: __________ (Because there are 3 parts!). * Math: ___ / ___

Problem 2: A square has 4 tiny squares inside. Exactly 1 is colored red. * Fraction name: __________ * Math: ___ / ___

Problem 3: A rectangle has 2 equal sides. 1 side is yellow. * Fraction Name: __________ * Math: ___ / ___

Problem 4 (Brain bender!): A circle has 4 slices. Exactly TWO of them are colored green. * Math: ___ / ___ * Wait! If 2 out of 4 are colored... doesn't that mean exactly HALF the circle is green?! Fractions are tricky!
