Addition Sentences for Even & Odd Numbers

πŸͺ„ Math Magic! Adding Even and Odd numbers together follows a secret set of rules. Once you know the rules, you can predict the answer without doing any math!

Do this: Read the concept below, then try the quiz or activity.

Lesson 29 of 186

Concept

There are three magic rules for adding Evens (numbers that pair up perfectly) and Odds (numbers with an odd-one-out).

🎯 The Magic Rules:
1. Even + Even = EVEN.
(If everyone has a partner in group 1, and everyone has a partner in group 2... when they join together, everyone still has a partner!)
   *Example: 4 + 6 = 10.* (All even!)
2. Odd + Odd = EVEN.
(Wait, what?! If group 1 has a leftover guy, and group 2 has a leftover guy... when they join together, those two leftovers become partners!)
   *Example: 3 + 5 = 8.* (Two odds made an even!)
3. Even + Odd = ODD.
(If group 1 has perfect partners, and group 2 has an odd-one-out... when they join together, that one guy is STILL left out!)
*Example: 4 + 3 = 7.* (An even and an odd always make an odd.)

Predict the future!

Instructions: Look at the two numbers. Use the magic rules to predict if the answer will be Even or Odd! You don't even have to solve the math!

Problem 1: 12 + 4 = ? * 12 is Even. 4 is Even. * Rule: Even + Even = ________

Problem 2: 7 + 5 = ? * 7 is Odd. 5 is Odd. * Rule: Odd + Odd = ________ (Remember the two leftovers become a pair!)

Problem 3: 10 + 9 = ? * 10 is Even. 9 is Odd. * Rule: Even + Odd = ________

Problem 4: 100 + 100 = ? * Without doing the math, will the answer be Even or Odd? * ________
