Area is the amount of surface a flat (2D) shape covers. We measure area in 'square units'.
Visual: Imagine you have a chocolate bar that is a rectangle. The little squares of chocolate that make up the bar are the square units. To find the area, you just count how many little squares are inside the rectangle.
How to Find Area by Counting Squares: 1. Look at the shape, for example, a rectangle drawn on a grid. 2. Count each and every square that is inside the lines of the shape. 3. The total number of squares you count is the area of the shape.
Example: A rectangle is 3 squares tall and 4 squares wide. You can count them one by one: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. The area is 12 square units. You could also see this as 3 rows of 4, and multiply 3 x 4 = 12.
