π― The Subtraction Stack: Example: 56 - 4 = ? 1. Stack perfectly: Write the 56. Write the 4 perfectly underneath the 6 in the Ones column! 5 6 - 4 -------- 2. Subtract down the Ones column: 6 - 4 = 2. Write the 2 at the bottom. 3. Subtract down the Tens column: 5 - 0 (the empty space is a zero) = 5. 4. Answer: 52.
It's just single-digit math, holding onto its bigger Tens partner.
