Lesson 78 of 186
Concept
Okay, things are getting serious. Stacking FOUR two-digit numbers requires ultimate concentration.
π― The Skyscraper Strategy: Example: 15 + 24 + 12 + 38 = ? 1 5 2 4 1 2 + 3 8 -------- 1. The Long Ones Column: 5 + 4 = 9. 9 + 2 = 11. 11 + 8 = 19! * Write the 9. Carry the 1. 2. The Long Tens Column: 1 + 1 = 2. 2 + 2 = 4. 4 + 1 = 5. 5 + 3 = 8! 3. Answer: 89!
π― The "Double Carry" Warning: When adding four numbers, your Ones column could easily add up to something huge, like 24! If that happens, you have to write the 4, and Carry a 2 to the Tens column! (Just add +2 instead of +1 down the tens side).
Try it
Build the skyscraper!
Instructions: Add down the massive columns. Check your work twice!
