Create Picture Graphs (Pictographs)
π¨ Math class meets Art class! We can create beautiful charts where the data is represented by little smiling faces, stars, or apples.
Do this: Read the concept below, then try the quiz or activity.
Concept
A picture graph (Pictograph) is the most fun graph to look at, but you have to be careful when drawing it!
π― The Number Key rule: The most important rule in creating a picture graph is the KEY. At the bottom of the graph, it must say "What does 1 picture mean?". * Key: β = 1 vote. (If 3 kids voted for pizza, you draw 3 stars: βββ). * Key: β = 2 votes. (Bigger numbers!). (If 4 kids voted for pizza, you only draw 2 stars! ββ. 2+2=4!).
We usually stick to the easy Key in second grade (1 picture = 1 vote) until you learn your multiplication tables!
Try it
Be the math artist!
Instructions: Imagine drawing the symbols for the picture graph. Assume the Key is 1 Symbol = 1 Vote!
Table of Votes for Favorite Color: * Red: 4 votes * Blue: 7 votes * Green: 2 votes * Key: 1 Smiley Face π = 1 vote.
Problem 1: How many Smiley Faces π should you draw next to the color Red? * Answer: ___ faces.
Problem 2: How many Smiley Faces π should you draw next to the color Blue? * Answer: ___ faces.
Problem 3: How many Smiley Faces π should you draw next to the color Green? * Answer: ___ faces.
Problem 4: If you wanted to add "Yellow: 5 votes", how many faces would you draw? * Answer: ___ faces.
