If no regrouping or smashing is needed, vertical subtraction is faster than lightning. 🎯 **The Stacking Rules:** **Example: 78 - 45 = ?** 1. **Stack Em!** Write the 78. Write the 45 perfectly underneath. 7 8 - 4 5 -------- 2. **Right Side First!** ALWAYS begin in the Ones column. * 8 - 5 = 3. Write the 3 at the bottom. 3. **Left Side Next!** Now subtract the Tens column. * 7 - 4 = 3. Write the 3 at the bottom. 4. **Answer:** **33**! You didn't have to hold massive numbers in your head. You just solved two tiny problems (8-5 and 7-4).
