Interpret Line Plots

šŸ“Š Read the skyline! You didn't paint this picture, but you still have to read the data. Count the X's to find the secrets!

Lesson 7

Concept

A line plot is already drawn. We have to "Interpret" it (which is a fancy science word meaning "understand what it says"). šŸŽÆ **How to Read the X's:** Imagine a line plot showing "Books Read By Students". * Above the number **1**, there are **two X's**. (This means TWO students read exactly 1 book.) * Above the number **4**, there are **five X's**. (This means FIVE students read exactly 4 books!) **The Magic Questions:** * **"How many kids read exactly 4 books?"** A: Read the height of the column! (5 kids). * **"How many kids read MORE than 2 books?"** A: Count ALL the X's that are above the numbers 3, 4, 5, etc! You must add them together.

Try it

Crack the line plot code! **Instructions:** Look at the description of the line plot and answer the questions. **Line Plot:** "Number of Teeth Lost by 2nd Graders" * Number 1: X X * Number 2: X * Number 3: X X X X * Number 4: X X X **Problem 1:** How many students lost exactly 3 teeth? * (Count the X's above the number 3!) * Answer: ___ students. **Problem 2:** How many students lost exactly 2 teeth? * Answer: ___ students. **Problem 3:** Which amount of lost teeth was the most common in the classroom? * Hint: Find the tallest tower of X's! Which number is it above? * Answer: ___ teeth. **Problem 4 (Brain Bender!):** How many kids lost MORE THAN 2 teeth? * (Hint: Count all the X's on number 3, plus all the X's on number 4!) * Answer: ___
