Concept
A picture graph (or pictograph) is a chart that uses pictures or symbols to represent data. It's a fun way to compare information visually. **Visual:** Imagine a graph showing 'Favorite Pets'. * **Cats:** 🐱🐱🐱🐱 * **Dogs:** 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶 * **Fish:** 🐠🐠🐠 There's also a **Key** that says: Each symbol = 1 pet. 1. **Read the Title:** First, see what the graph is about (e.g., 'Favorite Pets'). 2. **Look at the Labels:** See what categories are being compared (e.g., Cats, Dogs, Fish). 3. **Check the Key:** This is the most important step! The key tells you the value of each picture. Sometimes a picture might be worth 2, 5, or even 10 things! 4. **Count and Compare:** To find out how many people like dogs, you count the dog symbols. Since each 🐶 = 1 pet, there are 5 votes for dogs. You can easily see that dogs are the most popular pet because that row is the longest. **Key Idea:** The KEY is the key! Always read it first so you know how much each picture is worth. Then you can count by ones, twos, or fives to get the right answer.
