Subtract Money Word Problems (Up to $1.00)

šŸ’µ Calculate the Change! The classic subtraction word problem always involves giving the cashier a shiny dollar, and seeing what they give back.

Lesson 2

Concept

You know the rules. It's time to put them entirely into action inside a story. šŸŽÆ **The Trick Clues:** 1. **"Calculate his change."** -> This means SUBTRACTION. (Money given - Price = Change). 2. **"How much MORE does the toy cost than the book?"** -> "Difference" always means SUBTRACTION. (Big Price - Small Price). 3. **"She had $0.90 but LOST $0.35."** -> Lost/Dropped/Spent means SUBTRACTION. Always put the Biggest Number on top of the vertical stack!

Try it

Be the subtraction detective! **Instructions:** Find the clues that prove the story is a Minus (-) problem. Stack the biggest money on top, subtract, and drop the dot! **Mystery 1:** A fancy cupcake costs $0.85 in the window. A normal cookie costs $0.50. How much MORE does the cupcake cost? * Stack it! $0.85 - $0.50 ------- * Answer: It costs $_.___ more! **Mystery 2:** Leo has $0.75 in his piggy bank. He decides to give his little brother $0.35 to buy some candy. How much money does Leo have left? * Stack it! (5 - 5 = 0!). * Answer: Leo has $_.___ left! **Mystery 3:** You hand the cashier exactly $1.00. The item only costs $0.62. How much change do you receive? * (Hint: 100 - 62 = ? Borrow across the zeroes!) * Answer: $_.___ change.
