Lesson 2

Concept

An equation is only "True" if both sides of the equals sign (=) have exactly the same value! It's like a perfectly balanced seesaw. šŸŽÆ **Testing the Seesaw:** Look at this sentence: **14 - 6 = 9** 1. **Side A:** Do the math on the left side: 14 - 6 = 8. 2. **Side B:** The right side just says 9. 3. **Check the Balance:** Does 8 = 9? No! The seesaw is broken! This sentence is an imposter. It is **FALSE**. Look at this sentence: **7 + 8 = 15** 1. **Side A:** Do the math: 7 + 8 = 15. 2. **Side B:** The right side says 15. 3. **Check the Balance:** Does 15 = 15? Yes! Perfect balance. This sentence is telling the truth. It is **TRUE**.

Try it

You be the judge! **Instructions:** Do the math on the left side. Does it match the right side? Circle True or False. **Problem 1: 8 + 6 = 14** * Left side = ___ * Right side = 14 * True / False **Problem 2: 17 - 9 = 7** * Left side = ___ * Right side = 7 * True / False **Problem 3: 12 + 4 = 16** * True / False **Problem 4: 20 - 5 = 14** * True / False **Ultimate Challenge!** Find the ONE true sentence out of the choices below: A) 15 - 6 = 8 B) 9 + 9 = 17 C) 13 - 5 = 8
