Two-Step Word Problems - Up to 20
š¬ Action... Action again! These stories have two things happening. You have to solve the first part of the story before you can solve the end!
Concept
These word problems are mini-movies with a beginning, middle, and end. You have to write TWO math sentences to solve them! šÆ **The Two-Step Plan:** **Story:** "A bus had 12 kids on it. At the first stop, 4 kids got off. At the second stop, 5 new kids got on. How many kids are on the bus now?" * **Step 1 (The first stop):** The bus had 12, and 4 got off. Equation 1: 12 - 4 = 8. *Now there are 8 kids on the bus.* * **Step 2 (The second stop):** Now the bus has 8 kids, and 5 new kids got on. Equation 2: 8 + 5 = 13. * **Final Answer:** There are 13 kids on the bus! Always pause in the middle of the story to do the first math problem. Save that number for the end of the story!
Try it
