Concept

Multiplication is the tool we use when we have equal groups and we want to find the total. It's a more efficient way of doing repeated addition.

Visual Connection:
Imagine you have 4 bags of apples, and each bag has 3 apples.
*   Addition way: You could count them by adding: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3.
    *   3 + 3 = 6
    *   6 + 3 = 9
    *   9 + 3 = 12. You have 12 apples.
* Multiplication way: You can see this as "4 groups of 3".
    *   We write this as 4 x 3.
    *   4 x 3 = 12. You have 12 apples.
The Language of Multiplication:
*   4 x 3 = 12
* Factors: The numbers being multiplied (4 and 3).
* Product: The answer to a multiplication problem (12).
* The 'x' symbol means "groups of".

Key Idea: Multiplication doesn't give you a different answer than repeated addition, it just gives you the answer faster. If you see 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5, you can rewrite it as 6 x 5 to solve it more quickly.
