Concept
Learning multiplication facts is a key milestone. Let's look at the patterns in the first set of facts.
Multiplying by 2 (The Doubles): * This is just like the 'doubles' addition facts you already know! Any number times 2 is just that number added to itself. * The answers are always even numbers. * Pattern: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.
Multiplying by 5 (The Clock-Face Numbers): * This is like skip counting by 5s. * The answers always end in a 0 or a 5. * Pattern: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50.
Multiplying by 10 (The Zero Heroes): * This is the easiest one! Just take the number you are multiplying and add a zero to the end of it. * Example: 7 x 10 = 70. * Pattern: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100.
Multiplying by 3 and 4: * These require more memorization, but you can use skip counting to help. * 3s Pattern: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30. * 4s Pattern: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40. (Notice it's the '2s' pattern, but every other number is skipped!)
Key Idea: Use what you already know! Use skip counting and addition doubles to help you figure out the answers. The more you practice, the faster you will get.
