Identify Halves
🍕 When you split something into 2 EQUAL parts, each part is called a HALF! Sharing a cookie with a friend? That's halves! Half means 1 out of 2 equal pieces.

Understanding halves is your first step into fractions! 🎯 **What is a HALF?** • A half is ONE part when something is divided into TWO EQUAL parts • Both parts must be THE SAME SIZE • We write it as: 1/2 (say "one-half") 🍕 **Examples of Halves:** **Example 1: Pizza** Cut a pizza into 2 equal slices: 🍕|🍕 Each slice is 1/2 (one-half) of the pizza! **Example 2: Cookie** Break a cookie into 2 equal pieces: 🍪|🍪 Each piece is half of the cookie. **Example 3: Rectangle** Draw a line down the middle: [▭|▭] Each side is one-half! ⚠️ **IMPORTANT: Equal Parts!** The parts MUST be equal! ✓ These are halves: [▭|▭] ✗ These are NOT halves: [▭|▭▭] (not equal!) 💡 **Ways to Make Halves:** • Cut vertically (up and down): | • Cut horizontally (side to side): ─ • Cut diagonally (corner to corner): / All make halves as long as the parts are EQUAL! 🌟 **Half in Real Life:** • Half an hour = 30 minutes (half of 60) • Half a dollar = 50 cents (half of 100) • Half a dozen = 6 (half of 12) 🎨 **Fraction Language:** • 1/2 = "one-half" • The top number (1) = how many parts you have • The bottom number (2) = how many equal parts total
