Identify Equal Parts (Fractions)
π Fair Share! Fractions are just pieces of a shape. But if the pieces aren't the exact same size, someone is going to get mad!
Do this: Read the concept below, then try the quiz or activity.
Concept
Welcome to Fractions! "Fract" comes from a Latin word meaning "to break or shatter" (like a fractured bone!).
π― The Number 1 Rule of Fractions: You cannot have a fraction if the pieces are not EQUAL.
Example: Imagine a pizza. * Cut perfectly down the middle? Both halves are EQUAL. They are fractions! * Cut completely sideways so one piece is tiny and one piece is gigantic? They are NOT EQUAL. These are NOT fractions! They are just weirdly broken pieces.
If the pieces are not identical, it is not a fraction!
Try it
Is it a fair share?
Instructions: Look at the shapes cut into pieces. Tell me if the pieces are perfectly Equal, or Unequal!
Problem 1: A square is cut perfectly down the middle with a straight line. * Are the parts Equal? (Yes / No)
Problem 2: A circle has a tiny sliver cut off the right edge. * Are the parts Equal? (Yes / No)
Problem 3: A rectangle is cut into 4 identical, exact same size squares. * Are the parts Equal? (Yes / No)
Problem 4: A pizza is cut into 8 slices. 3 slices are huge, 5 slices are tiny. * Are they Fractions? (Yes / No)
