Identify halves, thirds, and fourths

Fractions show equal parts of a whole. Halves, thirds, and fourths must be equal-sized pieces.

Do this: Read the concept below, then try the quiz or activity.

Lesson 180 of 186

Concept

Fraction names: - half = 1 of 2 equal parts (1/2) - third = 1 of 3 equal parts (1/3) - fourth = 1 of 4 equal parts (1/4)

Important: Parts must be equal to be fair fractions. A shape cut into unequal pieces does not show correct halves/thirds/fourths.

Try it

Identify the fraction: 1. A shape split into 2 equal parts, 1 shaded 2. A shape split into 4 equal parts, 1 shaded 3. A shape split into 3 equal parts, 1 shaded 4. Draw one way to show 1/2 and one way to show 1/4
