Interpret Bar Graphs (Level II)

πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ Advanced Analysis! You know how to read the height of a bar. Now it's time to do addition and subtraction using the bars themselves!

Do this: Read the concept below, then try the quiz or activity.

Lesson 100 of 186

Concept

In Level 1, we just asked "How many voted for Green?". You follow the bar and say "8". Level 2 takes the kid gloves off.

🎯 The Multi-Step Questions: 1. "How many MORE kids voted for Blue than Green?" * Find Blue (15). Find Green (8). * "How many more" means DIFFERENCE (Subtract!). * Math: 15 - 8 = 7. (7 more kids voted Blue).

2. "How many kids voted IN TOTAL?" * "In Total" means ADD EVERY SINGLE BAR TOGETHER. * Bar A (5) + Bar B (10) + Bar C (12) = ? * Stack em! 5 + 10 + 12 = 27 total kids voted!

Try it

Graph math is the hardest math!

Instructions: Find the numbers hidden in the graph, then use them to solve the math problem.

Bar Graph Data (Types of bugs caught): * Ants: 20 * Beetles: 15 * Spiders: 5 * Moths: 10

Problem 1: How many Spiders and Moths were caught altogether? * Math: (Spiders + Moths) -> ___ + ___ * Answer: ___ bugs.

Problem 2: How many MORE Ants were caught than Beetles? * Math: (Ants - Beetles) -> ___ - ___ * Answer: ___ more.

Problem 3: How many bugs were caught in TOTAL? * Math: 20 + 15 + 5 + 10 = ? (Hint: Find a "make 10" pair!) * Answer: ___ bugs.
