Skip counting is counting forward by a number other than 1. It's a foundational skill for multiplication and for counting money. **Skip Counting by Tens:** This is like climbing a ladder where each step is worth 10. You just add a zero to the numbers 1, 2, 3...! * **The Pattern:** 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100. * **Visual:** Think about ten-frames. Each time you add a full ten-frame, you are counting by ten. Or think about dimes, where each coin is worth 10 cents. **Skip Counting by Fives:** This pattern is a little trickier, but it has a cool rhythm. * **The Pattern:** 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40... * **Notice the Ones Place:** The numbers always end in a 5 or a 0. It goes back and forth between them. * **Visual:** Think about a clock face! The minutes are marked in steps of 5. Or think about nickels, where each coin is worth 5 cents. **Key Idea:** Skip counting is like taking bigger jumps on the number line.
