Measure using an inch ruler

Become a measurement master! πŸ“ An inch ruler is a tool to find out how long things are. Let’s learn to use it to measure toys, books, and everything around us!

Lesson 2

Concept

An inch ruler is a straight tool with marks on it that represent inches. An inch is a unit of length. We use it to measure smaller objects. **Visual:** Look at an inch ruler. You will see numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.). The space from the '0' mark (the very beginning of the ruler) to the '1' mark is exactly one inch. 1. **Line it up:** To measure something, like a crayon, place the '0' end of the ruler at the very beginning of the crayon. Make sure the ruler is straight along the object. 2. **Read the end:** Look at the other end of the crayon. 3. **Find the number:** See which number on the ruler the crayon's end is closest to. If it ends at the '3', the crayon is 3 inches long! **Key Idea:** Always, always, always start measuring from the zero mark! If you start at the '1', your measurement will be off by an inch.
