Number Lines - Up to 1,000

šŸ›£ļø The Endless Road! The number line doesn't stop at 100. It stretches to infinity. How do we find our way when the numbers are massive 3-digit monsters?

Lesson 2

Concept

A number line up to 1,000 looks identical to the smaller ones. But the "ticks" between the numbers might mean something different! šŸŽÆ **The "Skip Ticks" Strategy:** If a line starts at 300, and ends at 400, there is no way they drew 100 tiny lines between them. Usually, they use Ten-Tick-Marks. 1. **Find the start and end:** The line is marked "500" on the left, and "600" on the right. 2. **Find the middle:** There is a big line exactly halfway. What is halfway between 500 and 600? **550!** 3. **Count the tiny ticks:** The tiny ticks are probably skip-counting by tens! (510, 520, 530, 540, 550, 560!). If an arrow points exactly one tiny tick past 800, the answer is 810! If it points directly exactly in the middle of 800 and 900, it is 850!

Try it

Read the giant number line! **Instructions:** Look at the massive number line and figure out where the arrow is pointing. Skip count by 10s or 50s! **Problem 1:** The number line goes from 200 to 300. The arrow points exactly to the very middle line. * Halfway between 200 and 300. * Answer: ___ **Problem 2:** The line starts at 700. The ticks go up by 10. The arrow points to the second tick mark after 700. * 700 -> 710 -> ___ * Answer: ___ **Problem 3:** The number line starts at 900. The arrow points 4 ten-ticks past it. * 900 -> 910 -> 920 -> 930 -> _____ * Answer: ___ **Problem 4:** The line goes from 100 to 200. The arrow points to the very first tick mark, which is a jump of 10. * Answer: ___
