Lesson 1

Concept

Counting money is an important life skill. To do it, you need to know the value of each coin and have a good strategy for counting them up. **Coin Values:** * **Penny:** 1 cent (¢) * **Nickel:** 5 cents (¢) * **Dime:** 10 cents (¢) * **Quarter:** 25 cents (¢) **Counting Strategy:** 1. **Sort the coins:** Group all the quarters together, all the dimes together, and so on. 2. **Start with the biggest value:** Begin counting your quarters first. This gets the total up high very quickly. 3. **Count on:** After you count the quarters, continue counting on with the dimes, then the nickels, and finally the pennies. **Example:** You have 2 quarters, 1 dime, 2 nickels, and 3 pennies. * **Quarters:** 25, 50... * **Dime (count on from 50):** 60... * **Nickels (count on from 60):** 65, 70... * **Pennies (count on from 70):** 71, 72, 73. You have 73 cents! **Key Idea:** Always start counting with the coins that have the greatest value. It makes counting faster and helps avoid mistakes.
