Equivalent Money (Up to $1.00)

šŸŖ™ Same value, different look! A one-dollar bill is just a piece of green paper, but it is exactly equal to a giant heavy sack of 100 pennies!

Lesson 2

Concept

"Equivalent" is a fancy science word that means "Equals exactly the same amount". Let's learn the value of American coins! šŸŽÆ **The Coin Values:** 1. **Penny (Copper, Abraham Lincoln):** 1 cent. 2. **Nickel (Silver, Thomas Jefferson):** 5 cents. 3. **Dime (Smallest Silver, FDR):** 10 cents. 4. **Quarter (Big Silver, George Washington):** 25 cents. šŸŽÆ **The Equivalents:** A quarter is 25. What is "Equivalent" to a quarter? * 25 Pennies. (25 ones = 25). * 2 Dimes and 1 Nickel. (10 + 10 + 5 = 25). * 5 Nickels! (5, 10, 15, 20, 25!). All three of those piles of coins will buy the exact same gumball from a machine!

Try it

Find the equal piles! **Instructions:** Add up the coins. Which piles have the exact same value? **Problem 1:** Pile A: 1 Quarter (25c). Pile B: 2 Dimes, 5 Pennies (10 + 10 + 5). * Are they Equivalent? (Yes / No) **Problem 2:** Pile A: 1 Dime (10c). Pile B: ____ Nickels? * (If a nickel is 5, how many make 10?) * Answer: ___ Nickels. **Problem 3:** Pile A: 10 Dimes (10, 20, 30...). Pile B: 1 Hundred-Dollar Bill. * (Wait! 10 dimes is 100 cents. 100 cents is 1 Dollar! Total trap!) * Are they Equivalent? (Yes / No) **Problem 4:** How many Quarters (25c) does it take to be equivalent to 1 Dollar (100c)? * (Hint: Think about a pizza cut into 4 pieces. "Quarters!") * Answer: ___
