Calculate the Correct Change

๐Ÿงพ The Cashier's Test! You hand the cashier a crisp 1-Dollar bill. The toy costs 60 cents. How much money do they have to hand back to you?

Lesson 3

Concept

When you pay with more money than the item costs, the extra money "left over" is called your Change. ๐ŸŽฏ **The Change Formula:** **Money Given - Price Tag = Change.** **Example:** * You give: $1.00 (100ยข). * Toy Costs: 78ยข. * Math: **100 - 78 = ?** * Stack and borrow! (Or count up! 78 + 22 = 100). * Answer: The cashier MUST hand you **22ยข** back. If the cashier hands you a dime and a penny (11ยข)... they cheated you out of your hard-earned math money!

Try it

Don't get cheated! **Instructions:** Subtract the price from the money you gave the cashier ($1.00) to find your change. **Problem 1:** You give: $1.00 (100). The Candy cost: 90ยข. * 100 - 90 = ? * Change: ___ยข. **Problem 2:** You give: $1.00 (100). The Pencil cost: 45ยข. * 100 - 45 = ? * (Hint: Borrow across zeroes! 10-5=5. 9-4=5). * Change: ___ยข. **Problem 3:** You give: 50ยข (Two quarters!). The Sticker cost: 30ยข. * Wait! You only gave 50! Subtract from 50, not 100! * 50 - 30 = ___ยข * Change: ___ยข. **Problem 4:** You give: $1.00. The Game cost: $1.00. * 100 - 100 = ___ * Change: ___ยข!
