How Much More To Make a Dollar?

💵 The Race to 100! A Dollar is exactly 100 cents. If you have 80 cents, what is missing to reach the top?

Lesson 2

Concept

This is exactly the same as the "Missing Addition Piece" algebra we learned, just specifically targeting the number 100! 🎯 **The Dollar Target:** **Problem: What do I add to 65¢ to make $1.00?** 1. Remember the math translation: **$1.00 = 100**. 2. The Missing Piece strategy: Total (100) minus Start (65). 3. **Stack it:** 1 0 0 - 6 5 --------- (Borrow across the zeroes!). 10 - 5 = 5. (The first 0 became a 9). 9 - 6 = 3. 4. **Answer:** 35¢! Let's double check: 65 + 35 = 100. Perfect!

Try it

Finish the dollar! **Instructions:** Subtract your current money from 100 to find out how much more you need. **Problem 1:** You have 80¢. How much more do you need? * 100 - 80 = ? * (Hint: Use your ten dials! 100 down to 90, 90 down to 80). * Answer: ___¢. **Problem 2:** You have a Quarter (25¢). How much more to make $1.00? * 100 - 25 = ? * (Hint: Count Quarters backward! $1.00 -> 75!). * Answer: ___¢. **Problem 3:** You have 50¢. * Answer: ___¢. **Problem 4:** You have 91¢. * (Count up! 91 + __ = 100?) * Answer: ___¢.
