Match Analog Clocks: to the Half Hour

šŸ•°ļø Welcome to clock reading! Analog clocks use spinning hands to show the time. Let's learn where the hands point when it's "o'clock" or "thirty".

Lesson 2

Concept

An analog clock has a round face with numbers from 1 to 12. It has two important hands: * **The Short Hand:** The Hour Hand. (It moves very slowly). * **The Long Hand:** The Minute Hand. (It moves faster). šŸŽÆ **Reading "O'Clock" ( :00 )** When the LONG minute hand points straight UP to the **12**, it is "o'clock". The SHORT hour hand points directly at the hour! * Long hand on 12, short hand on 4 = **4:00**. šŸŽÆ **Reading "Thirty" or "Half-Past" ( :30 )** When the LONG minute hand points straight DOWN to the **6**, it has traveled exactly halfway around the clock. The minutes are "30". Let's check the short hand! Because it is halfway through the hour, the SHORT hour hand will be resting exactly **halfway between** two numbers! Look at the number it just passed. * Long hand on 6, short hand floating between 4 and 5 = The hour is still 4! The time is **4:30**.

Try it

Read the hands! **Instructions:** Picture the clock hands to answer the questions. **Problem 1:** The long hand points straight UP at 12. The short hand points exactly at 8. What time is it? * Answer: ___ : 00 **Problem 2:** The long hand points straight DOWN at 6. The short hand is halfway between the 2 and the 3. What time is it? * Minute setting (.00 or .30): _______ * Hour: (It moved past the 2, but hasn't hit 3 yet! It is still ___) * Answer: ___ : ___ **Problem 3:** It is exactly 9:00. Where is the LONG minute hand pointing? A) Straight down at the 6! B) Straight up at the 12! **Problem 4:** It is 1:30. What two numbers is the short hour hand pointing between? * Answer: Between the ___ and the ___
