Concept

Comparing numbers means looking at two numbers and figuring out which one is bigger, which one is smaller, or if they are the same size. We use special symbols to show this.

The Symbols:
* > is the greater than symbol. Think of it like an alligator's mouth that always wants to eat the bigger number! 🐊 So, 5 > 3 means "5 is greater than 3".
* < is the less than symbol. The smaller number goes on the pointy side. So, 3 < 5 means "3 is less than 5".
* = is the equal to symbol. This means the numbers on both sides are the exact same value.

How to Compare Two-Digit Numbers: 1. Look at the tens place first. The number with more tens is the bigger number. For example, in 45 and 29, 4 tens is more than 2 tens, so 45 > 29. 2. If the tens are the same, look at the ones place. If you are comparing 68 and 62, the tens are the same (both have 6 tens). So, you look at the ones. 8 is bigger than 2, so 68 > 62.

Key Idea: Always start by comparing the digit in the tens place. Only look at the ones place if the tens are equal!
